Religious decisions based on tragic disasters
I was reading The Wall Street Journal's personal Journal section today where the main story was about the effects on religion pending a "natural" disaster. They interviewed people from all religions asking whether this disaster increased or decreased their faith. My views...Religion is man made, so, what are the religious implications....none. Now, my views on whether God had something to do with this????....I believe that there is a God because this is an awfully complicated world, people, animals and ecology to happen so quickly in time...I believe something is behind all of this. Anyhow, my take on the Tsunami and its destruction is this; The world is made of rock...all forms of it, from molten metals deep below the surface all the way to sand on the beaches. Just like the air that swirls around us on a daily basis the rock heats and cools. It happens slow in some areas and faster in others. Now, to get a little deeper...this is not one large rock that we are standing on (some of you were sleeping in your geology classes...shame on you), it is a lot of smaller rocks consistently smashing into each other from the force of gravity affected by the spinning of the plant. This is plate tectonics. These "plates" are constantly under pressure (because of the heating and cooling...like the atmospheric pressures in a sense) cause them to shift. Sometimes this happens under water causing....you know...Tsunamis. This happens when the rock slides either up or down causing water to either rush to fill or push out. An example of this would be to get a bulldozer and lift up one side of a swimming pool (i suggest it be and above ground cause the below ground are really expensive). Watch as the water rushes to level itself out.
To get to the point now...Did God put his finger down on this particular area and make a Tsunami happen??? I doubt it. Did he create everything including plate tectonics which caused it....probably (though I have no proof...its just a feeling). Did everyone that was in the way deserve to die???...No.
I am deeply sorry for all the people who lost their lives, families, and loved ones. It is a great tragedy not to be taken lightly...and I in no way am taking that way.
These disasters happen all over the world of the same magnitude but not causeing many deaths and we don't question our faith. Some people comment that there can't be a gracious God cause "it" wouldn't let this happen...well what about the thousands that lose their lives to hurricanes, tornados, avalanches, floods, volcanos, and all other ecological disasters? Should we point fingers at God and blame him? I don't think that would be very thankful for all the other things that God has graciously afford us. God created an intracite system that allows life to thrive on this plant, to keep that intact some disasters (as we call them) have to befall us so that generations to come can survive. The explination of what happened is God's science. God can be seen in the billions of people who have donated to relief whether it be money, time, or talents. That is where God is in this.
